Blog Assignment 4

The documentary about Girl Talk was all about how this artist uses different singers and writers music by mixing them together and creating a new and different sound. It is illegal to use someones work with out their permission which usually includes getting money for the use of their songs. The documentary talked about how it should not be illegal because everything that has been artistically done to some extent has elements from previous works. Fair use is one of the ways that Girl Talk is covering themselves and trying not to get sued. Fair use is basically can be used as a defense depending on the purpose of the use, is it commercial or private. The nature of the work is also taken into consideration and the amount and substance of the portion you use compared to the entire work as a whole. The last thing what effect does you using someone work have on the value of the original. The fact that Girl Talk only uses seconds of each piece of music and the outcome of the use is positive I think its a good defense for the artist.
Transformative use when the work uses a source work in a completely new or unexpected way. Girl talks uses the pieces of music in a new way, he mixes with other music. You can tell what the original work is but you can also tell that it is being used in a different unexpected way. Girl talk has not gotten in trouble from what I am aware of since watching the documentary and I think its because of these two defenses, he is doing something completely different with the works making it a transformative use.

Blog Assignment 3 "Interactivity"

Interactivity is essential the communication between a person and a medium like a computer. The more interactivity there is on let's say a website, the more trustworthy of a source it is. The article I chose to share in this blog post is "Examples of Interactive Advertising" by Sherrie Scott, Demand Media. This article breaks down interactivity in advertising in four different categories; Social Media,Videos, Pop-ups and Displays. Interactivity advertising is used to promote products and to build brand recognition. For social media interactivity is used to target audiences that have interested in the companies products. It is easier to target people because you know what their interest are. For example if you are a outdoor company you will target people who have an interest on being outdoors. Pop-ups are also a good interactive form of advertising, they will show up everywhere and people are going to click on them if they are interested. This topic is related to Internet communication because it talks about a form of communication that happens on the internet. It is important to know what types of advertising there are so us as communication majors can take advantage of using interactivity as a way to reach audiences in our careers. We measure interactivity by how much a person can participate with what ever is displayed. For example like I said earlier a website with a lot of links and sources and more things to do on it has a higher level of interactivity than one that only has a few links.

Blog 2 Information and Networks

In class we talked about three different types of information networks which included Sarnoff's Law, Metcalfe's Law and Reeds Law. The one law that I think I agree with most would have to be Sarnoff's Law just because I understand the concept as a future broadcaster, I am not saying its the best one I just can relate to it the most. It basically is broken down in the way that the value of network increases linearly with the number of people on it. I can really relate to the concept of the more popular a show is on radio or on TV the more money you can charge for advertising. That makes a lot of sense to me the shows during prime time which is the time when the most popular shows come on that when its going to be the most expensive to air advertisements. For TV it would be around 9pm-10pm because thats when the most people are watching TV. For radio the most listen to time would be around 7am and those are the spots that get the more listeners and viewers, so that's when you're going to reach a much bigger audience. This is the whole idea of
I think in 5 years it will be more common for people to get their information from the internet, even more than they do now. For example right now the main source for News information is on television during news casts, but I think that it will all move to the internet in the future. Our generation is very progressive so I feel as tough we will change with the times. For example todays older folks are really stuck in their ways, for example some people have always got their news from radio and they will still to this day do it that way even tough there are much better ways to get the news. But our generation like I said is very progressive, so I believe as times change so will we. The other thing would be the way we will access the internet will be through new devices. There is some new technology every year or things get improved in drastic ways.

Blog Assignment 1 (Online Identity)

In today's day and age social media is a big part of creating and building our identities. We create a personality online of how we want people to view us and see us. We post pictures of what we are doing and with whom we are doing them with. Social media tell people what activities we are interested and what political views we have. A person can learn so much about someone else just by looking at their Facebook. Aside from the social view point that media plays a in creating our identities it also plays a roll in creating our professional lives. For example media makers like us create videos and pictures to share online so people can see what we can do and what we are interested in. This is how potential employers see what type of person we are and how we identify ourselves.
When it comes to authenticity or anonymity and which one is more important I think that authenticity is the way I would go. When you are being authentic to who you are online there is more of a positive outcome to everything. People who are anonymous online always are negative and post things that offend people because they know there are not consequences. People would never say some of the things that they posted online. Also if you lie online about who you are chances are that the people that you know outside of social media will know that you are lying and that to me is embarrassing. I know we post pictures where we look our best but it's still us at the end of the day.
